We are brother and sister, Ken and Laurie. We along with our spouses, Lesie and Phil are the proud owners of this little “Treasure in the Pines”, that had previously been in our family for 4 generations.
Here’s the story…Our grandparents purchased this historical Big Bear home in the early 1940's from the Bartlett family, who were prominent early settlers in Big Bear Lake, for which Bartlett Road in Big Bear Lake is named.
Our Grandparents, Kenny and Edna Bacon, raised our Mother, Merrilyn, and our Uncle Bob in this quaint little home. Our Mom tells the story that when the Bartlett’s owned the home it didn’t have a bathroom, only an Outhouse; although the downstairs bathroom was added by the time our Grandparents bought the home. When they purchased the home from the Bartlett’s it was a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house. It had a wood stove in the kitchen for cooking. The downstairs bedroom was added on by our Grandparent’s for our Mother, so she would have a room of her own. Uncle Bob inhabited the large territory of the big upstairs bedroom, while our grandparents occupied the cozy little upstairs bedroom. It is said that “love grows best in little houses”!
Uncle Bob recalls that the house was built Circa 1928. When our Grandparent’s purchased the home it was located behind the Safeway grocery store, which at that time, was on the South side of the main street (Village Drive, just West of Pine Knot). Mom recalls the house being moved to its current location in about 1949, when she was in High School.
Mom remembers that they went to Elementary School in a Log Cabin. In junior high their classes were taught at a conference center in a big building with several rooms. During her 1st year of high school, classes were also taught in Log Cabins.
I (Laurie) lived in this house with Mom and our Grandparent’s until 1959, until I was 5 years old. Uncle Bob lived at home with us for some of those years. Growing up, Ken, our sister, Raelene, and I made fond memories here while visiting our Grandparents’ Big Bear Lake home.
Time marches on, our children are grown now and have children of their own. There are now 5 generations of our family who have loved this home and have made so many great memories here. Much fun has been had frolicking in the snow, making snow men, fishing at the Lake, walking to the Village for fun games at the Amusement Arcade, Skiing, Hiking and Exploring the back country.
After being our Grandparents' home for forty years, Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary became the owners of "The Bacon House". Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary poured their love and labor into the house, updating it with a remodel in the 1970’s. With its' new face-lift, this dear home, continued to be the place that our families and friends gathered to spend cherished time together...where we chalked up another three and a half decades of memories.
Then, after being in the Bacon family for over 70 years this sweet little abode was sold in 2015 to a fine family who appreciated the diamond in the rough that this sweet home was. This dear family breathed new life into our home when they kindly remodeled it, bringing it back to the beautiful and charming home that it had been so many years ago. They named the home "Rustic Cove".
Life's path took an adventurous turn for that family and we are so grateful that they sold the home to us. We are so very thankful and beyond thrilled with the blessing of having our Grandparent's historical legacy back in the fold of our family!
We're delighted to share our little piece of heaven with our guests.
Come enjoy our little “Treasure in the Pines” and build some fond memories during your stay!
